Overview

This guide is written with the expectation that you have installed CrossOver and are ready to install Office. If not, go to the CrossOver overview page for Microsoft Office 2016 and follow the steps described there to get ready to install Office.

  1. Read through the tips & tricks pages as well as current forum threads.
  2. Choose an installation method from below and obtain the necessary installation files described for each method.
  3. Using the CrossOver Software Installer, Select Microsoft Office 2016 as the application, choose your installation file, select the bottle, install & finish.

Note: If using the ODT installation method, Office will not install as part of the CrossOver Software Installer wizard. Use the 'Run Command' inside the newly created bottle to navigate to and launch your batch file. During a download you will not receive progress updates, however the Office 2016 Pro Plus and Visio is approx. 1.8GB so you can monitor the download directory size or the log file to monitor progress. During install you will receive visual progress updates.

We also recommend using the 32-bit offline installer, as the 64-bit generally will fail to install.

Don't use an ISO

Based on the reports in the forums (as well as our own experience), installing from an ISO image does not appear to work (at least in version 17.0.0 of CrossOver). Microsoft discontinued the ISO version of Office 2016 in quarter 3 of 2017, with the Click-to-run installer being the default supported method of installation from that point on for end users.

The standard installation method is to use the click-to-run installer from Microsoft which downloads the files and installs the software into the bottle.

Office Deployment Tool (ODT) for Click-to-Run (C2R) - Alternative installation method

The ODT is a useful alternative to the C2R tool as it enables Office products to be downloaded and deployed from local disk, is available publicly from Microsoft regardless of whether you have a Office subscription or license so enables you to test Office on CrossOver easily and repeatedly.

There are many other features to the ODT, however for the purposes of installing Office in CrossOver, these are the most valuable.

The ODT is a Microsoft command line executable you download and run inside a bottle to perform a Office download or installation.

The ODT uses a configuration.xml file to automate the installation. A simple DOS batch file can be created to execute the download or installation.

Refer to the previous link for information on the options available in the configuration.xml file. Below is an example of an ODT installation setup:

  1. o365proplusretail-installation.bat (This batch file is used to perform the office installation, directly from the internet if you've not downloaded it locally or locally if you have executed the o365proplusretail-download.bat file beforehand)
  2. o365proplusretail-download.bat (This batch file is used to download the office installation files to the same folder as 'setup.exe')
  3. setup.exe (This is the ODT downloaded previously)
  4. o365proplusretail-configuration.xml (This is the ODT configuration file)
  5. Office/ directory (This is the downloaded copy of Office which is created by the tool after executing the download batch file)

Notes on the above example

  1. The Product ID must be correct for the license/subscription. Refer to 'How to select the correct Office software for your license/subscription' for further information.
  2. The ODT will save/use the Office software in the location of the ODT by default.
  3. The logging parameter will ensure the installation log file is saved to your linux home drive as Y: is mapped to your home drive by default in CrossOver on Linux. Z: is mapped to the root of Linux (/) by default. The log is useful for understanding why an installation failed.
  4. See the ODT reference guide for details on how to save the software elsewhere, choose alternative languages, display levels, updates, logging etc.

How to select the correct Office software for your license/subscription

Microsoft Office comes in a variety of plans and software packages so it is important to ensure you install the option that is suitable for your license or subscription or you will need to install again.

Note: The above Microsoft article does not include the Product ID for Microsoft Office 2016 Standalone which is typically associated with licenses purchased through the Microsoft Home Use Program (HUP). The product ID for this is ProPlusRetail (Source: https://answers.microsoft.com/..). These installations are licensed by a Product Key rather than a subscription.

Ever needed to connect two computers together without going through a wireless network? I’ve previously written about how to connect two computers wirelessly using an ad-hoc wireless network, but it’s not as fast as being directly connected.

If your computers are on a wired network, you can network two computers and then share files and folders, but it’s a lot of work! An easier way is to simply create a homegroup if you are running Windows 7 or higher. A third way is to use a crossover cable to connect two computers and transfer data.

In order for this setup to work, there are a few things you need to make sure are setup or configured properly. I will try to go through all the different steps in this article.

Step 1 – Configure IP Addresses

Usually, if you are using a crossover cable to connect two computers, the computers are not connected to a LAN network. In this case, you will need to configure static IP addresses for each computer.

You have to make sure that both computers have IP addresses that are on the same subnet. For example, if you give one computer an IP address of 192.168.0.1, then you should give the second computer an IP of 192.168.0.2.

If you used the above IP addresses, you should use a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. If you use an incorrect subnet mask, the connection will not work.

Lastly, the value for the default gateway should be the same on both machines. You can pick which IP address you want to use, but use it on both computers for the default gateway. Below is how my setup looks for one computer:

It’s worth noting that you could technically leave the Default Gateway and Preferred DNS server fields blank as you really don’t have to connect to any device outside the local network. Step 2 – Crossover Cable

The second thing you need to verify is that you actually have a proper crossover cable. Basically, there are a few different types of crossover cables, but it’s best to get the standard crossover cable where the green and orange pairs are swapped and the brown and blue pairs stay in the same position.

The only pins that need to be crossed are 1,3 and 2,6. So just check your cable on both end and make sure it matches the diagram. You can get a cheap 10ft crossover cable on Amazon for $5 or you can get crossover adapters, which are a little bit more, but can turn any Ethernet cable into a crossover cable.

Step 3 – Local User Accounts

If you’re having problems accessing files both ways, you may have to create a user account on each computer that has the same name and same password. This helps get past any kind of Access is Denied errors that may pop up.

Make sure the accounts are administrator accounts also! It’s best to create a new account rather than rename a current account.

Step 4 – Disable Firewalls

Finally, you should disable the firewall on both computers to ensure that none of the file sharing ports are being blocked. You can do this by going to Control Panel and then Windows Firewall. Click on Off.

That’s about it! If you follow all these steps, each computer should be able to access the other properly. You can check the connection by opening a command prompt (click on Start and type in cmd) and trying to ping the other computer. Just type the word ping followed by the IP address of the other computer.

You should now be able to go to My Network Places or Network in Windows Explorer and access the other computer. You’ll also need to setup a shared folder if you want to transfer files.
